Understanding Pricing

Anyone can snap a picture, bring it to Target, Costco, or the local camera store and get it printed for about 19 cents. Printing costs, however, are only a miniscule portion of a custom photographer’s cost of doing business. Let’s take, for example, a typical 1 hour session. Here’s what you are really paying for when you hire a pro.

1 -The Photographer’s Time

phone calls, e-mails, pre and post session meetings – .5 to 3 hours

photographer’s session prep time – 1 hour (either preparing lighting, backgrounds and equipment in the studio or driving to a location and setting up/breaking down equipment)

photographer’s shooting time – 1 hour

assistant’s time – 1 hour

post processing time – uploading to computer, editing, retouching, enhancing, applying special affects, loading to online gallery – 2 to 3 hours

2. Overhead

Each session has to cover a percentage of the overhead a photographer incurs to do business.  Some of my overhead costs are:

Marketing and advertising

Utilities

Insurance

Clerical labor

Office supplies

Equipment repairs

Cleaning

3 . Equipment Investment

This includes cameras, lenses, studio strobes, light stands, tripods, light modifiers, reflectors, backgrounds,  computers, monitors, memory cards, flash units, cases and other accessories.  Professional equipment provides excellent results  but is expensive. The financial investment a professional photographer makes in her equipment is huge but absolutely necessary. It is also an ongoing expense as equipment quickly becomes obsolete as technology advances.

4. The Photographer’s Education, Training and Experience.

5. The Photographer’s Artistry.

6. The Reliability, Dependability and Accountability of a professionally run business.
